Fishing - saltwater

Great fishing and Alaska are synonymous, and this is certainly the case at Gull Cove. Five species of Pacific salmon, halibut, rockfish and lingcod are all abundant in the surrounding waters. From the comfort of the Yakobi, you will troll for king and coho salmon or jig for halibut. The large open deck of the Yakobi is ideal for salmon and halibut fishing and when the weather is wet, you can duck inside to keep dry and see what's cooking on the stove.

Back at Gull Cove, your catch of salmon and halibut is filleted, vacuum packed, and frozen for your departure home. Of course, some of the fresh fish is prepared in a variety of delicious ways for your evening meal in the lodge. We will send some of those recipes home with you too.

Salmon fishing on the Yakobi.  Trolling for king and coho salmon in comfort on the Yakobi can be a real treat.  There are many good fishing spots right near Gull Cove, but with 18 knot cruising speed we can get around the Icy Straits area quickly to explore different hot spots. The outer coasts of Chichagof and Yakobi Islands offer lots of opportunities to tie into 10 to 20 pound coho salmon and king salmon over 50 pounds.

Light tackle saltwater fishing.  Sometimes there are some fun fishing opportunities to use spinning gear or fly rods on the Yakobi or from smaller skiffs for pink salmon or Dolly Varden. Fish moving through the passes between islands or gathering at the mouths of spawning streams can make for some exciting fishing.

Halibut fishing.  Halibut fishing is good throughout the summer and the possibility of hooking a truly monstrous fish is very real.  Small halibut are in the 30 to 40 pound range but these great eating fish get much bigger.  Halibut weighing 100, 200, or 300 pounds are quite the challenge to get in the boat.  Although normally fished near the bottom with bait or artificial lures, halibut have been known to hit a bait while trolling for salmon.

Halibut is a fantastic eating fish and at Gull Cove Alaska lodge you will be able to enjoy it in a number of great recipes.
